Calcium propionate is a safe and reliable food and feed mildew inhibitor approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Calcium propionate, like other fats, can be absorbed by humans and animals through metabolism, and supplies necessary calcium for humans and animals. This advantage is unmatched by other antifungal agents and is considered GRAS.
Molecular mass 186.22, white light scaly crystals, or white granules or powder. Slightly special smell, easy to deliquescence in humid air. The monohydrate salt is a colorless monoclinic plate crystal. Soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol. It has a wide range of antibacterial effects on mold, yeast and bacteria, and can be used for antiseptic effect in bread and cakes. The lower the pH value, the higher the antiseptic effect. Calcium propionate is almost non-toxic to humans. Used in cosmetics as a preservative, the maximum allowable concentration is 2% (calculated as propionic acid). Application：
Calcium propionate is used as a preservative in a wide variety of products, including but not limited to bread, other baked goods, processed meat, whey, and other dairy products. In agriculture, it is used, amongst other things; to prevent in cows and as a feed supplement, Propionates prevent microbes from producing the energy they need, like benzoates do. However, unlike benzoates,propionates do not require an acidic environment.
Calcium Propionate can inhibit growth of some individual molds and bacteria and is widely used in grain products such as bread to inhibit molds and prolong product shelf life. In addition, it is used to prevent other products from deterioration resulted from microorganisms. Compared with other bacteria killers, it is non-toxic and lowin cost, and thus is widely used in wines, cakes,fruit jam, bean products, chocolate, cheese and western style meal. It is never harmful to health and has a remarkable effect in anti-mold.
